Overtaking world markets
Suomen Gummitehdas Osakeyhtiö already engaged in export in 1926 via the limited liability firm Teknillinen kauppaosakeyhtiö. It was not until the 1950’s when the export accelerated in earnest when Hakkapeliitta opened up export to the other Nordic countries and into further areas of Europe, followed by the world beyond.
Radial tyres for export
The development of the new-generation Hakkapeliitta began in 1978, and the NR 09 was introduced two years later. The new tyre featured a surprise: the traditional suction pad pattern had been replaced by a streamlined arrow shaped tread.
Success through tests
The Kometa-Hakkapeliitta was introduced in 1963. This was the familiar Haka-Hakkapeliitta tyre with hard metal-tipped studs made by Kovametalli Oy. The Hakkapeliitta launched in 1964 was the first tyre designed particularly for studding.
The story of Nokian Hakkapeliitta
The world's first winter tyre (in Finnish: talvirengas), the Kelirengas made by Suomen Gummitehdas, was introduced in 1934. In that day and age, winter driving meant snowy, often un-ploughed roads and speeds hardly exceeding 50 km/h. The first Kelirengas tyres were designed for trucks to replace the complicated, expensive tyre chains.
Wartime challenges in tyre industry
Over one hundred years of professional skill, inventiveness and will – the roots of the business extend all the way back to 1898, when Suomen Gummitehdas Osakeyhtiö was founded.

Dangers of Aquaplaning and slush planing
When driving on a dry road in the summertime, drivers hardly have to think about their tyres (in Norwegian: dekk). When a thunderstorm breaks or a persistent summer rain fills the grooves in the road or a slush-weather occurs in between harder winter conditions, it is quite a different ballgame.

Nokian Tyres Fastest on Ice
The new world record for fastest car on ice was set by Nokian Tyres' Finnish test driver Janne Laitinen who drove 331,610 km/h (206,05 mph) on the Gulf of Bothnia in Oulu, Finland.Handling on Ice
Conducted on an icy surface, this handling test measures a tyre’s maximum grip in curves with different radiuses and on a long straightaway. Measurement results and the test driver's views are used in the evaluation. Two ice-covered tracks: 800 meters and 1,000 meters.10 Milestones of Ivalo Proving Ground
Nokian Tyres' 700-hectare proving ground in Ivalo, Finland, is in use from November to May. With state-of-the-art equipment, the different tests and the expert staff make sure that all the extreme situations in winter driving are thoroughly studied.Over 75 years of Nokian tyres
The Nokia rubber factory launched passenger car tyre production in 1932 when the compressors and curing presses required for tyre manufacture were ordered. The first Nokian tyres featured four layers of fabric and a very flat surface, as if a board had been slammed on the tyre (in Swedish: däck).Nokian winter testing = 24/7 + 6 months + Nordic weather
North of the Arctic Circle, in the town of Ivalo, in Finnish Lapland, the company operates a proving ground with over 700 hectares of land where Nokian product development and testing teams and test drivers put tyres to a trial with the task of identifying the best winter tyres.Nokian testing in extreme conditions
Approximately 50% of Nokian product development costs are spent on testing. Adequate test results cannot be achieved just in laboratory conditions and through automated tests.Nokian’s unique slush planing tests
You have to change lanes to overtake others and you have to cross the slush barrier between the lanes. Then the driver turns right again and again crosses the slush barrier. Here the car loses side grip and can easily skid.November 17 2011
Minimised fuel costs
Nordic friction tyres generally perform best in the rolling resistance comparisons between different tyre types. Nokian Hakkapeliitta R SUV rolls effortlessly, which means that its rolling resistance is very low. This in turn means lower fuel costs and less carbon monoxide emissions.
